abstract = "Combination of climate, natural conditions and irregular
occupation of river basins makes Brazil one of the countries most
affected by floods in the world. While economic and population
growth push the population to live in areas prone to flood events,
it is important to adopt necessary measures to reduce disaster
risk. Land use planning and disaster prevention involve the
concept of susceptibility to flooding which can be understood as
the set of natural conditions that increase the likelihood of a
region to be flooded and can be observed before the occurrence of
a disaster. In this context, the aim of this work is to delimitate
the floodplain of the Sapuca{\'{\i}} River in the Itajub{\'a}
urban area, located in southern Minas Gerais (MG) State, Brazil,
and classify the main land use classes present within the
floodplain. The methodology used presented satisfactory results,
allowing the delimitation of the floodplain through the
topographic variable, to delimit the floodplain of the
Sapuca{\'{\i}} River in the region of the urban area of
Itajub{\'a}. The intersection between land use information and
the mapped floodplain indicates the exposure of the Itajub{\'a}
urban area to potential losses of lives and material assets, which
highlights the need for risk prevention measures.",
